Who We Are
The Nepal Institute of Development Studies (NIDS) is a non-governmental research organization established in 1998 and headquartered in Kathmandu, Nepal. For over two decades, NIDS has been at the forefront of development research, focusing on the critical issues that shape the social, economic, and political landscape of Nepal.
NIDS contributes to the nation’s development process through rigorous research, evidence-based program implementation, and active engagement with policymakers, civil society, and international partners. By bridging the gap between research and practice, NIDS works to ensure that development strategies are grounded in evidence, responsive to local realities, and oriented toward equitable outcomes for all Nepalis.
Our Vision
A prosperous and equitable Nepal where evidence-based policy and inclusive development empower every community to thrive.
Our Mission
To develop an integrated and sustainable development model suitable for Nepal — one that draws on rigorous research, community engagement, and collaborative partnerships to address the country’s most pressing development challenges.
Our Approach
NIDS pursues its mission through four core areas of action:
Research & Knowledge Generation — We conduct innovative, policy-relevant research and surveys that generate the evidence needed to understand Nepal’s development challenges and identify effective solutions.
Program Implementation — We design and implement programs that raise awareness, alleviate poverty, and create measurable improvements in the lives of communities across Nepal.
Institutional Empowerment — We work to strengthen local institutions, equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and capacity to lead and sustain development programs in their own communities.
Migration & Policy Advocacy — We conduct dedicated research on migration patterns and vulnerabilities, translating findings into concrete policy recommendations that are brought to the attention of decision-makers at the national level
